Bellview Fusion provides a modern, hybrid CATI and web survey data collection platform which has been completely rewritten using database and internet technologies. It is a work of massive scale, and includes a number of ingenious facilities which are remarkable for their simplicity, despite their underlying complexity. These include the concept of multiple hierarchies through child interviews, interview snowballing and an innovative, simplified approach to building complex call handling strategies in a mixed-mode context. The case study provided, from NORC in the USA, revealed that the system had coped flawlessly with what is arguably one of the most complex CATI/web surveys ever undertaken. The system helped achieve high response rates, reduced administrative tasks, and also helped to reduce the burden on respondents in a number of ways.
