The David Winton Award is given for the best technical paper which introduces a new technique or stretches an existing
technique in a way which adds to the body of market research knowledge; anyone reading the paper should be able to
replicate the methodology. The data produced by the 2001 Census make it potentially more useful than previous censuses. In “Social grading and the Census”, Erhard Meier and Corrine Moy describe the careful work done by a working party of the MRS Census & Geodemographics Group (CGG) to enable Social Grade statistics to be obtained directly from the Census for the first
time. This enhanced its value and has resulted in a new layer of data for the benefit of the research industry.
What the judges said: “A very important and thorough work, excellently described.”
