Free Census data - New MRS seminar offers guide to benefitsDate: 09 June 2003 A new seminar directing research practitioners on the benefits of the wealth of data from the 2001 Census is to be hosted by The Market Research Society's (MRS) Census and Geodemographics Group. The one-day seminar - 'How to benefit from the new free Census data' - is due to take place on Wednesday, 2 July, 2003 at The Society of Chemical Industry, Belgrave Square, London SW1. With the bulk of local authority information from the 2001 Census now available, and with the small area data due to be released in July, the seminar is ideally timed to help market and social researchers maximise their use of the new information as soon as possible. Addressing the seminar will be a number of experts on the 2001 Census, including: Keith Dugmore, Demographic Decisions Ltd; Chris Denham, ONS Census Division; Professor David Martin, Southampton University; Professor Angela Dale, CCSR, University of Manchester; Corrine Moy, NOP World; Peter Sleight, Target Market Consultancy; Professor Martin Callingham, Birkbeck College. The seminar will be chaired by Dr. Barry Leventhal, Teradata Division, NCR, and Chair of the MRS Census and Geodemographics Group. The main focus of the seminar will be an overview of the information available from the 2001 Census to help delegates understand its applications and how to access it. Importantly, this is the first time that Census data have been made freely available to everyone, making it essential for research practitioners to remain up-to-speed on the uses of this new information if they are to maintain their competitive edge. In addition, the seminar will examine some of the particular initiatives
of the 2001 Census and their specific benefits. One such initiative
is the new postcode-based Census geography. Professor David Martin will
explain how a new geography was created for Census outputs, how the
data were segmented into this geography and the benefits this offers
for enhanced data linkage and modelling. Another significant initiative is the inclusion of social grading on the 2001 Census. As part of her session, Corinne Moy will look at the value of social grading in Census information for market and social researchers as well as advising on how the data can assist in survey design and profiling regional and niche populations. Barry Leventhal, MRS Census and Geodemographics Group Chair, commented, "A considerable amount of data from the 2001 Census is now available and the small area data are due to be released in July. This level of information offers significant benefits to research practitioners in helping them to improve the value and accuracy of their surveys. Moreover, for the first time, data will be effectively free at the point of use which will undoubtedly lead to a much greater take-up than ever before. For these reasons this seminar is a must-attend event for all market and social researchers who want to maximise their contribution to clients through the effective use of 2001 Census data." To guide researchers further towards some of the most important 2001 Census information sources, the MRS Census and Geodemographics Group has established a dedicated wesbite - www.geodemographics.org.uk. It acts as a gateway to a variety of geodemographic websites and helps users to locate appropriate data sources quickly and easily. 'How to benefit from the new free Census data' is due to take place between 10.00am - 4.00pm on Wednesday, 2 July, 2003 at The Society of Chemical Industry, Belgrave Square, London, SW1.
