Meeting the research requirments of the modernisation agenda - MRS Conference supported by LariaDate: 20 August 2003 The Modernisation Agenda is the central theme of a topical conference announced today by The Market Research Society (MRS). The conference will explore how local authorities and their partners can carry out effective research and consultation and will examine good practice and practical implementation through case studies and interactive discussions. The one-day conference, entitled 'Delivering Good Practice Research in Local Government', is supported by the Local Authorities Research & Intelligence Association (LARIA). It is designed to advise local authority researchers on best practice in research, public consultation and evidence-based planning to support enhanced delivery of plans and services. The conference will run between 09.00 - 17.30 on 18 September at the
IPA, London, SW1. The day will consist of four sessions covering a range
of topics, including:
A number of highly-experienced speakers will address the conference, including Ann Atkinson, Head of Research Unit at Newcastle County Council and Chair of the LARIA Member Development Group; Stephen Hilton, Corporate Consultation Manager, Bristol City Council; Roger Sykes, Head of Research, Local Government Association; and Paul Vittles, Chairman and Managing Director, RBA Research, and Chair of the LARIA External Relations Group. The conference will be chaired by David Karfoot, Environment Department Head of Research and Communications at Hampshire County Council, and Chair of LARIA. With the Modernisation Agenda requiring local authorities to carry out more research and consultation with users and potential users of public services in order to encourage continuous improvement in service delivery, the conference is expected to attract interest from a broad audience, including experienced local authority researchers who are facing new challenges from the Modernisation Agenda; local authority researchers new to the field who want to learn about best practice; Chief Officers of local authorities; Senior Policy Makers and Cabinet Members, as well as representatives of local authority partners, such as the health services and police. David Karfoot, Chair of LARIA and conference Chair, commented, "Effective research and consultation is critical to local authorities under the Modernisation Agenda, yet many local authorities are unsure of the best way to go about it. This conference is designed to provide delegates with constructive advice on how to achieve best practice in this field and demonstrate to them the real value that well-conducted research can offer." David concluded, "LARIA is very pleased to once again be supporting an MRS conference to help deliver good practice research in local government. As increasing numbers of MRS members are becoming involved with the local government sector, it is appropriate that we continue to work in partnership to allow us all to benefit from the latest thinking in this important area of research and public consultation." Delegates who are interested in attending the conference should contact Michelle Cecil at The MRS on 020 7566 1873 or by email at training@mrs.org.uk Notes for editors
· LARIA was established in 1974 to promote the role and practice
of research within the field of local government and provide a supportive
network for those conducting or commissioning research. |
