Crime Cutting Research Captures Major Industry Award

Date: 09 December 2008

A groundbreaking qualitative study designed to cut crime levels through interaction with former offenders was lauded by the research industry at last night’s Research Awards, hosted by MRS at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Angela Browne of QA Research’s ‘Breaking the Cycle of Offending’ was praised by the judges for demonstrating the huge impact research can have on in decision-making and shaping policy within the public policy arena.  Other high-profile research studies developed in response to current topical issues joined QA Research in the winners line-up:  Krishan Lathigra from the Government’s Central Office of Information (COI) and Nancy MacDonald of 2CV Research were recognised for their innovative approach to understanding young people’s financial needs, as joint winners of the new Financial Services award, alongside Opinion Leader.

This year’s Research Awards also saw the debut of the New Consumer Insights category – which drew entrants from a broad range of sectors.  The successful winners were Andy Moore of Vodafone and Fiona Blades of MESH Planning, for developing a new product to help tackle the challenges of an increasingly fragmented media.

Nunwood succeeded in taking the Best Agency crown from FreshMinds, who has won this for the past two years, also beating Conquest Research, Firefish and Hall & Partners to the night’s top prize.  Nunwood was lauded for taking return on investment to the core of its client work at a time when proving value for market research is crucial.

Professor Michael Thomas, Chair of the MRS Awards Panel, commented: “It is encouraging to have seen such an appetite for the new categories we introduced this year.  Awarding strategic research projects which bring competitive advantage to businesses operating in a struggling financial services sector or seeking share of voice in an increasingly fragmented media helps to demonstrate the valuable role played by research in responding to changing industry pressures.  Last night’s excellent line-up proved once again that research is central to business and policy in today’s world; long may this continue.”

He continued: “It is particularly good to see that, despite the gloomy economic climate, researchers, their clients and representatives from many sectors were keen to get together to celebrate the best that our industry has to offer – making this the biggest Awards ceremony we have ever hosted.”

The Research Awards 2008 had a record-breaking 600 guests in attendance, and was hosted by Daisy McAndrew, chief political correspondent for ITV News, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.
