Engineering Company Case Study - Global Employee Opinion Survey
Project Drivers and Overview
After conducting employee attitude surveys biannually for a number of
years to measure employee attitudes towards the operation, management
and the changing culture with the company, a FTSE 100 engineering company
appointed a firm of survey consultants to provide a more strategic approach.
The aim was to deliver more meaningful data, improve action planning
as well as manage the data collection process smoothly.
Specifically the company was looking for
- A more integrated and customised approach to employee research:
- linking to its 'leadership competencies' and 'high performance
team culture'
- linking to its 'areas of critical business focus'
- linking findings to actions required to impact shareholder
value positively
- Improved internal benchmarking and meaningful external benchmarks
- Provide performance data on its leadership team around the world
- Build on learning and data collected from previous surveys
Basis on which the project was awarded to the survey consultants:
- Global benchmarking data
- Project management skills
- Questionnaire design expertise
- Skills to create target-driven action plans
- Expertise in analysing and understanding the data
Methodology and Coverage
This two year programme involved a sample survey of employees in year
1 and a census survey of all 80,000 employees world-wide in year 2 using
the same questionnaire, which is available online web-based and paper-based.
Two languages were used in year 1 and up to 5 in year 2.
The length of the project is 20 months - with data collection in September
2002 and 2003.
Comprehensive PDF reports are produced at corporate, business group
and business unit levels, with extensive comparisons to the survey consultants
benchmark data and the company's previous surveys. The reports are followed
up with action planning and training sessions to help managers in the
business produce target-driven action plans.
Project Evaluation and Benefits
The survey consultants are midway through the project but the company
says that the improvements are already noticeable. It says that the
survey consultants are adding value through:
- Responsive project management
- A good understanding of the needs of the company
- Developing an improved bespoke survey questionnaire whilst ensuring
continuity from previous years
- Designing bespoke reports which are appropriate for different levels
- Advanced statistical analysis allowing the links between survey
data and business Key Performance Indicators to be understood
