R-Net North Inaugural Meeting
February 2005
The inaugural R-Net North event held at RBA Research on 23 February saw the start of some promising networking and idea-sharing from researchers north of the Watford gap. Several presentations were given and break-off discussions were held on each topic for ideas to be shared.
The first subject, ‘Things that knock the confidence of new researchers’, explored answers and helpful tricks to encourage the confidence of young researchers. Making presentations, holding your first focus group, doing a new research technique for the first time and providing recommendations on the spot were just a few of the topics that attendees felt less confident on. Helpful hints on how to be more confident in those situations is a suggestion for a future R-Net North event.
Qualitative techniques that are currently in use were also debated and it was good to see that not everyone had heard of all of them. This provided further scope for future presentations at R-Net North events.
Generally people wanted a network that would provide advice, career guidance and market knowledge. They want a forum that will challenge thinking, explore new ideas, enable them to learn from the experience of others and provide support in developing their careers.
The R-Net North Committee, Ajay Patel (RBA Research), Amy Hibbert (McCallum Layton) and Sarah Robinson (QA Research) is currently planning the next event based upon the feedback from the event. Please keep your eye on the website for the next event and if you have any ideas for future topics, suggestions for guest speakers or would even like to present yourself, please contact one of the committee members, they would be glad to hear from you.
