R-Net at RESEARCH 2004

To raise awareness of the issues that face young researchers today, R-Net co-ordinated a debate entitled 'Market research will still be my dream job in three years time' at the MRS Dream Economy conference 2004, the intention of which was to bring the concerns of young researchers to the forefront of debate and facilitate discussion between new and more experienced researchers. R-Net collected the opinions of young researchers via the Young Researchers Survey 2004, and through vox-pops style interviews at our winter social event.

Chaired by Paul Crooke the debate began with an explanation of R-Net and an introduction to our speakers, who went on to lead the debate.

Jaime Rose (shortlisted for the Best Newcomer Award as a result of her part in the discussion) and Andrew Osman spoke in favour of market research as a dream career, and Ruth Buchanan and Lisa Ross presented the flip-side of the argument.

The audience proved to be quite a cross section of researchers with a wide variety of experience, all of whom were keen to come to some sort of mutual understanding in terms of what young researchers can do for the industry, and what the industry can do for young researchers.
