MRS 5-A-Side Football Tournament 2011

The 14th annual MRS 5-a-side Tournament, held at Hanwell Town FC and sponsored by HPI, had 31 Male teams and 6 Female teams taking part. Everyone turned up, everyone competed and the sun kept shining.

The keenly contested men’s event resulted in semi-final victories for IFF (who beat SPA Future Thinking 1–0) and ICM (2–0 winners over Nunwood). As is often the case, the final itself was a tense affair with ICM eventually being crowned Champions, defeating IFF by a goal to nil.

But the day still ended in celebration for IFF as their ladies team (IFF Ladies) emerged with an unblemished record of 5 wins from 5 games from the league based competition and, hence, way out of reach for Research Now Ladies, runners-up with 8 points.

MRS Golf Day 2011

This year’s MRS Golf Day took place on Thursday 19th May and was held once again at Chobham Golf Club. The venue was in excellent condition and we were blessed with brilliant sunshine throughout the day, which was somewhat energy sapping for the 32 players that had decided to do battle over 36 holes.

The morning Stableford competition was won by Chris Nash (Feedback Consumer Research) with 42 points and the runner up was Will Bridger (student linked to The New Fieldwork Company) with 39 points. Prizes were also awarded for the best front nine which was won by Pat Frazer (Critical Research) with 21 points and the best back nine which was won by Tony Dent (Sample Answers) with 20 points.

The afternoon round saw a different format (Greensomes) where golfers were paired up and played as a team. This competition was won by John Steinitz (MRS) and Derek Mitchell (Alpha Research) who scored 43 points. Runners up were Chris Nash (Feedback Consumer Research) and Ben Leet (UGAM) with 42 points.

There were also prizes awarded for the longest drive, David Watson (Confirmit) and nearest the pin, Charlie Mowat (Yap Happy).

Thanks to the organisational skills of Mark Dent from Sample Answers and the sponsorship of The Research Club and Sample Answers, £300 was raised for the MRBA.

MRS 5-A-Side Football Tournament 2010

Great weather accompanied a keenly contested competition, sponsored by HPI Research, between 37 teams at Hanwell Town Football Club on Sunday 4 July.

The men’s tournament was won by YouGov who beat Mindshare 3-1 after extra time in a close final. In the female event, IFF just shaded things over SSI, winning 1-0 in the final.

MRS Golf Day 2010

The MRS Golf Day was held on Friday 11 June 2010 at Chobham Golf Club on a day that was forecast to have torrential rain and thunderstorms during the morning. Fortunately the weathermen got it wrong again! Although the day started out in a light drizzle, it wasn’t long before the wet weather gear was being removed and, indeed, by the afternoon session it was positively balmy. The day was made possible by sponsorship from Sample Answers and Bob Qureshi, with the proceeds (£220) being donated to the Market Research Benevolent Association. The prizes and trophies were well worth the effort and the winners were delighted.

The winner of the singles stableford competition in the morning with a magnificent score of 46 points was Ben Leet from Ugam Research Solutions with Richard Collins of Confirmit hard on his heals with 44 points.

Winners of the afternoon greensomes competition were Tariq Mirza of Intellex Dynamic Reporting with Dorte Torpe Hansen of Strategir scoring an impressive 48 stableford points, with last year’s winners William Bridger (whose mother Helen works for The New Fieldwork Company) and Chris Nash of Feedback Consumer Research with a very creditable 43 points.

Other winners were:

  • Morning front 9 - John Steinitz (MRS)
  • Morning back 9 - Pat Fraser (Critical Research)
  • Leading Lady - Sue Heath (Dairy Crest)
  • Nearest the pin - Richard Collins (Confirmit)
  • Longest Drive - Chris Nash (Feedback Consumer Research)

Once again thanks go to Mark Dent of Sample Answers who organised the day as well as getting all the prizes and trophies. New sponsors for next year are very welcome so, if you would like to help in this respect, please contact Mark Dent at Sample Answers or John Steinitz at MRS.

MRS Golf Day 2009

Held on 2nd July 2009 at Laleham Golf Club on one of the hottest days of the year. This did not stop the boys and girls of the research industry from playing 36 holes in a truly competitive way. The day was made possible by sponsorship from Sample Answers and Cint, with the proceeds of the day (£340) being donated to the Market Research Benevolent Association. The prizes and trophies were well worth the effort as you can see.

The day was dominated by Will Bridger who was celebrating his 16th birthday on the day.His mother works for The New Fieldwork Company and whisked him away at the end of the day to celebrate a surprise birthday party. Playing off a ridiculous handicap of 16 (he must surely be down to single figures by now) he managed to score 48 stableford points in the morning and with his partner in the greensomes, Chris Nash, managed a mere 46 points in the afternoon! Many congratulations to Will.

Other winners were:

  • Morning runner up - Phil Dunn
  • Morning front 9 - Chris Boniface
  • Morning back 9 - John Wigzell
  • Leading Lady - Sue Heath
  • Nearest the pin - Tariq Mirza
  • Longest Drive - Ram Tiwari
  • Greensome runners up - Oscar Carlsson and Ben Farr

It was great to see more ladies in the competition this year and we hope that even more will participate in the future. Our thanks go to Mark Dent of Sample Answers who organised the day as well as getting all the prizes and trophies.

MRS 5-A-Side Football Tournament 2009

The men’s competition was won by OHAL Alphas who beat Research Now (RSNAL) 1 – 0 in extra time after a closely fought game.  In the female event, Research Now were again runners-up losing out to TNS Angels 3 – 1, making two consecutive championships for the TNS girls.

Thanks to everyone for taking part, and for all the supporters who came along.  See you all next year.

MRS Golf Day 2008

22 players from the research industry gathered at Wyke Green on Tuesday 15 July 2008 for the annual MRS golf day, this year sponsored by Sample Answers and ConfirmIT. We were blessed with a warm day, with a steady wind and conditions were ideal for the two competitions that traditionally form the basis for the day’s activities.

As usual the day began with coffee and bacon ‘butties’ and at 8.30 a.m. the first 4 ball teed off for the morning individual (Stableford) competition with the following prize winners:

  • Nearest the pin – Niraj Patel (Field Facts).
  • Longest drive -  Mark Whelan (MW Partners)
  • First 9 holes – Mark Dent (Sample Answers)
  • Back 9 holes – Mat Cudd ((Feedback)
  • Runner Up & Ladies Winner – Sue Heath (Dairy Crest)
  • Winner Overall – Richard Collins (ConfirmIT).

After a sustaining lunch of ham, egg and chips, the afternoon Greensomes competition commenced at 2 p.m. leading, eventually, to 4 more prize winners:

  • Runners up 2008 Greensomes – Richard Cowland & Mervyn Silver (both of Field Facts)
  • Winners 2008 Greensomes - Philip Dunn (Insight) & Sue Heath (Dairy Crest).

The day ended with a few drinks and sandwiches accompanying the prize giving including a prize draw raffle in aid of the benevolent fund.  All in all a good time was had by the participants and the day raised a total of £367.60 for the MRBA. Our thanks are due to the sponsors and, in particular, to Mark Dent for organising the day and getting all the prizes.

Poetry in Motion

Research Network members Justin Gutmann, Malcolm Rigg and David Smith took part in an epic ride from Ghent to Aix on 8-10 September in aid of MRBA. The ride recreated the ride, from the Robert Browning poem 'How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix", though by bicycle rather than on horseback.

MRS Golf Day 2007

The MRS Golf Day took place on 9 July at Wyke Green Golf Club. It was a day of two halves... quite literally; the morning's play saw 18 holes completed in sunny, hot, beautiful conditions, while the afternoon was for many probably the most wet, cold and scary afternoon of their lives, with players stranded on the course for not one but two major thunderstorms. The game was finally abandoned on Health & Safety grounds after hailstones and lightning strikes!. In the end three players were tied on 36 points, so the prizes were awarded on count back. In first place was Sue Heath, second was Ray Tiwari and in third place was Phillip Dunn. Nearest the pin and the longest drive were both taken by Richard Collins.

Two former Chairmen of MRS took part in the Snowdonia Marathon on the 29 October. Justin Gutmann (Chairman from 1999-2001) and David Smith (1995-1997) joined around 800 other runners to run up and then down Wales’s highest mountain in pursuit of raising money for charity.

Both runners were supporting the Market Research Benevolent Association and Justin also ran on behalf of a charity set up by MRS member Virginia Barstow in memory of her son and which supports the drilling of wells in Africa.
