MRS has completed a review of the syllabus for the MRS Diploma in Market & Social Research Practice with its key stakeholders. As a result, a new syllabus has been developed which will be effective from the June 2012 assessment round.
MRS, in partnership with The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and Royal Statistical Society (RSS), has launched a best practice guide for using statistics in communications and in the reporting of research results.
This event will be a chance to see presentations from the winner and finalist of the 2010 MRS/ASC Award for Technology Effectiveness. Presentations will include a demonstration of the software and also describe the thinking behind the innovation, the technology behind the solution, the challenges faced during development and plans for future enhancements.
MRS Qualifications have been designed for people with different levels of knowledge and experience, with the underlying principle of improving excellence in research. This document provides a short guide to the work of the MRS Awarding Body, how it is structured and what it does.

The new Focus on... programme has been announced. This new series of seminars places the spotlight on key business and personal skills. Free of charge for MRS members with at least a year’s experience of working on research projects whether supply or client-side.
The aim of the third annual IJMR Research Methods Forum is to go back to basics and re-assess the fundamentals of designing effective research projects in today’s world, where time is often of the essence and there are significant pressures on costs. The Forum will explore the challenges facing previously accepted ‘best practice’, their impact on the future direction of methodology, and whether the principles of good research design are under real threat.

Consultation on policy options for geographic information from Ordnance Survey CGG & MRS Responses

The Government is considering abolishing the edited electoral roll. The current framework governing access to and the supply of electoral registers has now been in operation for seven years. The Government wishes to consult on the impacts, both positive and negative, that could stem from accepting Recommendation 19 of the Data Sharing Review, to remove the provision allowing the sale of the edited electoral register, and consider whether other options exist.

IJMR Call for Papers - Market Research in Recession
What does economic turmoil mean for the market research industry; what is the impact on methodologies, applications, structure? How will the industry look once the economic cycle starts to turn from down to up? What are the lessons from recessions of the past?

Updated Regulations for Use of Predictive Diallers
Following a consultation in December 2007, Ofcom issued a revised Statement of Policy on the persistent misuse of an electronic communications network or service on 10 September 2008. MRS has revised its Regulations on the Use of Predictive Diallers to match these procedures.
Consultation on standard text for Thank you leaflets
From January 2009, only MRS Company Partners will be permitted to provide MRS IID cards to non-MRS member interviewers.
As part of this policy, MRS Company Partners will also have to use a standard text on Thank you leaflets used in conjunction with MRS IID cards.
MRS is now seeking views on this proposed standard text.

Rolled up holiday pay illegal says European Court
On 16 March 2006 the European Court of Justice, ruling on two cases from English courts, found that rolled up holiday pay schemes breach the Working Time directive. The cases will now return to the English courts for a final decision. MRS has issued a report which outlines the basis of the decision and its possible impact.

Predictive diallers and silent calls
On 1 March 2006 Ofcom issued a new Statement of Policy on the persistent misuse of an electronic communications network or electronic communications service. This Statement is designed, in part, to address the problem of silent calls. To help members abide by this new statement, MRS has released Regulations for Use of Predictive Diallers (updated from the previous MRS document on this subject). These revised MRS Regulations are binding on all MRS members and MRS Company Partners.

Social grade and the 2001 Census
The MRS Census & Geodemographics Group developed an algorithm for deriving approximate social grade codes (the 'ABC1' system) from the 2001 Census. In order to help users to use the results across the 16-64 age range MRS commissioned a customised set of Census tables from ONS. A description of these tables, a spreadsheet which provides the table outlines and details of how to obtain these tables free of charge is now available.
