Administrative Boundary Data Service for Central and Eastern European Countries

The website of a partially EU-funded project to develop a set of digital boundary data for the countries of central and eastern Europe. The project is still at an early stage but online data provision will probably be possible in 2001. The countries involved are as follows: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Finland and Greece.

Albanian Statistics

The website of the Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) (available in English) linking to the latest releases of statistical data on the censuses of population and housing, agriculture and economic enterprises as well as a range of other social, geo-demographic and economic key indicators. The next census of population and housing has been postponed to 2022 as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Austrian Statistics - Statistik Osterreich

As the website of the official Austrian government statistical agency, these pages enable access to standard economic and social indicator figures for the last three years. The site is not available in English.

Belgian Statistics

The website of the National Institute of Statistics in Belgium. Although the English-language version of the site is still under construction, the site includes indicator statistics that highlight the economic, demographic and environmental trends in Belgium.

Bulgarian Statistics

The website of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) (available in English) linking to the latest releases of statistical data on the census and other socio-demographic and economic topics as well as a range of macro-economic key indicators. The fieldwork for the 2021 Census was initially scheduled to take place over the period 22 January-15 February, but is currently postponed until 7 September - 3 October as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A comprehensive listing of of international statistical agencies from the US Census Bureau.

CEPS/INSTEAD - Centre for Socio-Economic Research in Luxembourg

In addition to detailing the current research taking place, this site provides online access to descriptions of seven surveys and projects administered by the Centre, including the Luxembourg Income Study and the Household Panel Comparability Project.

CIA, The World Factbook

The Factbook is a comprehensive resource of facts and statistics on more than 250 countries and other entities.

Croatian Bureau of Statistics

CroStat acts as a one-stop access point to the latest official Croatian demographic statistics.

The 2021 census is scheduled to be conducted to record the situation at midnight on 31 March 2021. The field work will be conducted between 1 April and 7 May. Citizens will have the opportunity to complete the census form online on their own between 1and 10 after which date census takers will visit those households that have not completed the online survey.

Cyprus Statistics

The website of the Cyprus Statistical Service provides links to statistics on population and social conditions. The next census is scheduled for 1 October 2021.

Czech Statistical Office

A comprehensive and very up-to-date site enabling access to a wealth of demographic and economic data about the Czech Republic, and to press releases and reports associated with it. The 1999 Statistical Yearbook is also available online, as is the KROK database which provides data disaggregated to regional level for 570 national indicator statistics. The first phase of the 2021 Census will be carried out online over the period 27 March-9 April. Those persons not counted online will then be followed-up and enumerated with a paper questionnaire during the period 17 April-11 May. Denmark Statistics - StatBank

StatBank is a large statistical database maintained by Statistics Denmark. Online distribution of statistics has been a part of the dissemination strategy in Denmark since 1985. It is updated every day 9.00 am (CET) and contains all new statistics. The statistics can be presented as cross-tables, diagrams or maps. ESDS International

ESDS International disseminates and supports both aggregate and survey international datasets for UK FE and HE. The service is jointly run by Mimas and the UK Data Archive.

Estonian Statistical Office

The website of the Statistical Office of Estonia provides data for a range of indicators, the latest information on the census and various other statistics about Estonia and its populace. Estonia’s 2021 Census will be primarily register-based with a reference date of 31 December. A small number of data items not available from Estonian registers will be collected via short household questionnaire. This Eurostat publication provides details of current EU census regulations. It includes specifications of census topics and outputs as well as details of quality, timeliness and punctuality.

Eurostat is a European statistical information service delivered by the European Commission. Updated daily, this vast site contains news, reports and a large database of downloadable datasets, as well as user-friendly tutorials and multilingual facilities.

Finland National Geoportal

Geo-spatial information for Finland. In Finnish only.

Finnish Statistics

Statistics Finland provides official statistics on the Finnish population and economy, and this website includes StatFin, a statistical self-service system, for accessing this detailed data. The site also provides information on the products commercially available from the organisation such as a Finnish business information register.

French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies - INSEE

In addition to a fairly comprehensive range of demographic and economic indicator statistics, INSEE's website also provides information on the French Rolling Census and lists of official publications and working papers.

Geoportal with comprehensive geo-spatial information for Norway. Brief introduction in English, otherwise in Norwegian

Géoportail

Géoportail is a comprehensive on-line service of the French government with maps and high resolution aerial photography from more than 90 sources for France, freely available as open data. The service, first developed by two public agencies (IGN and BRGM), was launched in 2006 and progressively updated and extended (see 'Actualites'). Geoportail has IGN topographical maps together with administrative, cadastral (land parcel), building survey, and transport maps, plus more specialised maps such as public utilities, hydrography, weather, geology, and land use. There are also historic maps of France, and much more. All maps including the aerial photography may be combined and viewed in transparent layers controlled by the user. All maps can be zoomed and scrolled. Place names are identified and searchable for the smallest villages and physical locations. The site, in French only, is designed for users to drill down into content and comprehensive supporting information on the maps and original sources.

German Federal Statistical Office

This site includes the latest official German demographic, environmental and economic indicator statistics, press releases, and the opportunity to obtain data from official German surveys through the online Statistik-Shop (which, unlike the rest of the site, is only available in German).

Germany’s next census will combine the collection of some data from an online enumeration with the use of administrative registers. Originally scheduled for 16 May 2021, the census has been postponed to 15 May 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

German Socio-Economic Panel, The

The GSOEP is similar in many ways to the British Household Panel Survey. Since 1984, this project has carried out a longitudinal study of around 6,000 households and is truly multipurpose in scope, covering topics from health to household composition. Data (via SOEPinfo) and survey documentation are available online.

Hellenic Statistical Authority

The NSA is responsible for collecting, analysing and disseminating statistical information in Greece. The site enables users to download a range of statistics and the Association's most recent press releases.

Hungarian Central Statistical Office

The HCSO administers the execution of the official surveys in Hungary and the subsequent dissemination of the data. The site includes some freely-downloadable publications and a compendium of basic Hungarian statistics. More detailed datasets can be accessed via the STADAT system, for which subscription is required.

Iceland in Figures - Statistics Iceland

As the Icelandic national statistics institute, Statistics Iceland's website provides detailed demographic and economic statistics and the institute's latest press releases that act as brief summaries of the statistics elsewhere on the site.

INSPIRE

Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 March 2007 established an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE). The initiative intends to trigger the creation of a European spatial information infrastructure that delivers to the users integrated spatial information services.

INSPIRE geoportal for the EU

Under the INSPIRE Directive the European Commission has established a community geo-portal for the Member States to provide links and access to their wide ranging geo-spatial "infrastructures" as well as through any access points the States themselves decide to operate (GKB includes entries for geoportals in France, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Scandinavian countries). The site is explored and navigated through a 'discovery viewer', and is in English and other community languages, but national material is usually in the language(s) of the Member State. Irish Central Statistics Office

This site provides basic indicator statistics for the Republic of Ireland, downloadable publications and press releases, and information on ordering more explicit reports.

Ireland’s next census has been postponed from 18 April 2021 to 3 April 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Italian National Statistical Institute - ISTAT

ISTAT's website provides comprehensive datasets and related reports and articles on Italy's population, economy and environment. The site is updated regularly to include the very latest figures and press releases.

Italy’s next census on 9 October 2021 will combine the collection of some data from an online enumeration with the use of administrative registers.

Kyrgyzstan Statistics

The National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic (NSC) is the central statistical office of the country. The Committee is administratively autonomous and its head serves as the country's chief statistician who reports to the President. The NSC is responsible for population censuses, household surveys, demographic statistics and a wide range of economic statistics involving establishment and enterprise surveys, as well as prices, international trade, the national accounts, government finance, agricultural, labour and social statistics. The next census originally scheduled for 23 March 2020 is currently postponed until 11 September 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latvian Central Statistical Bureau

The CSB is the Latvian equivalent of the British ONS. The site contains all the latest official press releases, up-to-date socio-economic data and information on obtaining English language versions of the Bureau's publications.

Luxembourg Statistical Portal – STATEC

STATEC (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) is an administration under the authority of the Ministry of Economics, providing public and private decision-makers and the citizens, a high-quality statistical information service, by producing statistics, analyses and studies mirroring a detailed, reliable and objective image of the Luxembourg society. Luxembourg’s next census will combine the collection of some data from an online enumeration with the use of administrative registers. Originally scheduled for 1 February 2021, the census has been postponed to 1 June 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luxemburg National Geoportal

Topographical maps of the Grand Duchy to very detailed scales free online, plus thematic map layers, with guidance on obtaining further products for Luxemburg relating to INSPIRE. Versions in English, French, German, and Lëtzebuergesch.

Maltese Central Office of Statistics

Since 1947, the Central Office of Statistics (a department of the Maltese Government) has been responsible for collecting official statistics about Malta and its population through censuses and other surveys. This site includes online reports on Malta's demography, and some datasets.

Malta’s next census is scheduled to take place on 1 October 2021.

Market Data and Digital Boundaries from MB-Research

MB-Research provides market data and digital boundaries at small scale for many countries worldwide. This includes a purchasing power metric at small area level for the whole of Europe. Brochures in pdf format, with details of the data on offer and prices, are available for download from the site. The company is based in Nürnberg, Germany.

Montenegro Statistics Office - MONSTSAT

MONSTAT is the recognised body for the production of a wide range of official statistics in Montenegro. The next census is currently scheduled for 1 April 2021.

National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova

The goal of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is to present reliable, timely and objective information on economic, demographic, social and environment situation of the Republic of Moldova. The next census is scheduled to take place on 3 April 2023.

National Records for Scotland

National Records of Scotland (NRS), formerly the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS), is part of the devolved Scottish Administration. It is responsible for the Census and the registration of births, marriages, and deaths. It also publishes information about population and households, and is the main source of family history records.

Netherlands Statistics

This website delivers very up-to-date reports on most aspects of Holland's economy and demography, in addition to the range of indicator statistics provided by most national statistical institutes.

North Macedonia State Statistical Office

The State Statistical Office is the specialised and independent organisation within the state administration in the Republic of North Macedonia (formerly the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). The basic functions of the institution are collecting, processing and disseminating statistical data about the demographic, social and economic situation of the Macedonian society. The next census is currently scheduled for 1 April 2021.

Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency

NISRA is reponsible for administering the Census in Northern Ireland, and for providing statistics related to the Province. The site contains some data on Northern Ireland's demography and to other key issues of importance, such as crime and education.

Norwegian Statistics

The Statistics Norway site delivers a wide variety of up-to-the-minute statistics on Norwegian life and the Norwegian environment. The Publications section contains every publication produced by Statistics Norway, most of which can be freely downloaded.

Polish Statistics

The website of Statistics Poland. Poland’s next census, scheduled for 31 March 2021, will combine the collection of some data from an online enumeration with the use of administrative registers.

Portuguese Statistics - INFOLINE

The website of Statistics Portugal. The INFOLINE service is an online access point to official Portuguese statistical data and related reports and publications. Originally scheduled for 22 March 2021, Portugal’s next census is currently postponed to 19 April 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PSI Navigator

PSI Navigator is a search engine and directory for public sector information resources (files, datasets, publications etc) for many European Union countries.

Regiodata

Regiodata provides regional economic data for Austria and eleven Eastern European countries. Access to the query portal - the Geomarketing Portal - is available through the site with free registration and then a charge per query. Information available includes economic data, purchase power indices, market potential estimates and regional population data. The site is written in the German language.

Republic of Moldova Statistical Office

The website of the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova. The next census is planned for 3 April 2023.

Romanian National Institute of Statistics

Official statistics in Romania is organized and coordinated by the National Institute of Statistics. Its site includes census data and access to statistical publications such as the Romanian Statistical Yearbook.

Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia

The site includes census data and access to statistical publications such as the Statistical Yearbook.

Statistics Lithuania

This site provides comprehensive official statistics for Lithuania including details of the Population and Housing Census of 2001. The site can be used to access to many statistical databases and publications.

Swedish Statistics

This site, run by Statistics Sweden, disseminates news, press releases and data produced by the Swedish government's official statistical office.

Swiss Federal Geoportal

The geographical information platform of the Swiss Confederation with direct access to topographical maps and many layers of thematic data and metadata made available by public bodies, and accessible to all as open data. English, French, German, and Italian versions.

Swiss Statistics

'Swiss Statistics' s the website of the Federal Statistical Office in Switzerland, and includes a search facility to find specific pieces of data among the vast range included on the site.

The Office for National Statistics

National statistics Online is the home of offical UK statistics.

This is Ireland, Part 1 - Highlights from Ireland's 2011 Census

This report is the first of two publications summarising the results of Ireland's 2011 census. This first one, This is Ireland - Part 1, looks at overall population change by county; it also examines age, marriage, households and families as well as including first results on nationality, foreign languages, the Irish language, religion and housing. The second summary report, This is Ireland - Part 2, (coming in June), will look at other social and economic factors such as employment, occupations, education and skills as well as health related topics.

Turkish State Institute of Statistics

This website provides access to a host of demographic data and online reports, both for Turkey as a whole and for each of its provinces. The site is regularly updated with the latest published statistics and reports.

UNECE census wiki

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) census wiki is the portal for information, materials and events related to population and housing censuses in the UNECE region, and UNECE-led work in this area.
