For too long, the social media conundrum has focused on privacy and access to data, which is seen by some as being fair game in the public domain. But it’s not the only issue: data collection, interrogation, analysis, reporting and publication all need thinking about too. In this lecture, Steven Ginnis, Head of Digital Research at the Social Research Institute, will outline the building blocks of an ethical approach to social media research, focussing on a legal framework vs regulation vs public ethics. Steve will give his recommendations on how the sector should move forward in this area, with additional comments from MRS Policy & Standards Director Dr Michelle Goddard on the Society’s position.
