MRS Gold MedalThe MRS Gold Medal is a rare distinction granted in recognition of an outstanding lifetime contribution to market research. 2008 Roger Jowell is one of the most eminent social scientists in Britain. He came to Britain from South Africa in 1964, and in 1969 set up Social Community and Planning Research (SCPR), which later changed its name to the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). He was the Director for thirty years before moving to City University to become a Research Professor and to set up the Centre for Comparative Social Surveys. Roger’s most recent claim to fame is the work he has done to improve cross-national social research by being the driving force behind the development of the European Social Survey (ESS) programme, which he co-founded and directs. This was recently awarded the Descartes prize by the EU, the first time it had been won by a social science project. However, at least as important has been the work Roger has done over many years in the UK on both the British Social Attitudes survey series and the British Election Study series. His great achievement has been to build substantial, high quality, expensive, social tracking surveys and find ways to keep them running over many years until the data becomes sufficiently valuable for them to be self-sustaining. He was knighted last year for services to social sciences an his appointment as the new Deputy Chair of the UK Statistics Authority was recently announced.
