MRS seminar urges researchers to 'Free Yourself from Research'Date: 24 June 2003 An innovative evening seminar due to be hosted by The Market Research Society (MRS) has been designed to encourage researchers to use their many transferable skills for activities other than research. 'Free Yourself from Research - four rants and a challenge!' will take place between 6.00pm - 8.00pm on 2 July, 2003, at the IPA, London. The event, which is aimed largely at qualitative researchers, is intended to encourage delegates to explore the many skills they use in their day-to-day working lives and help them to discover other ways in which these talents can be used to the advantage of their clients besides pure research. Chair of the event, Philly Desai of Turnstone Research & Consultancy, commented "Qualitative researchers possess a wide range of transferable skills - managing group dynamics, interpersonal skills, spotting trends - but all too often they are only used for research. The aim of this seminar is to encourage qual researchers to appreciate their talents and put them to work in a wider capacity, for instance idea generation, cultural analysis, public engagement, even predicting the future! "All the evidence suggests that clients value these additional services, but researchers need to be freed from the shackles of their research thinking before they can really begin to deliver these benefits", Philly concluded. Joining Philly Desai to deliver the 'four rants and a challenge' will be Gill Ereaut, Consultant, GEQR, who will speak on the value of analysing clients; Mike Imms, Partners in Development, who will suggest some ways to generate new ideas; Paul Vittles, Chairman & Managing Director, RBA Research Ltd, who will advise on how to positively engage the public; and Ray Poynter, Managing Director, The Future Place, who will encourage delegates to look into the future for clients. 'Free Yourself from Research' continues the discussion generated by the thought-provoking session hosted at the recent MRS Conference, 'RESEARCH2003: The Thought Leadership Revolution'. Andy Dexter, Conference Programme Chair, commented, 'This is the first in a series of Thought Leadership seminars due to be hosted between this and next year's MRS Conference. Far from Conference being a stand-alone event in the annual marketing calendar, we are aiming to create a rolling programme of seminars which continue the thinking generated by one Conference and feed into the next. 'RESEARCH 2004 - Welcome to the Dream Economy' will be the second in a trilogy of MRS Conferences on the Thought Leadership theme."
