MRS is seeking a new Editor-in-Chief and Editor for its journal, the International Journal of Market Research (IJMR) which is published by SAGE Publishing.

About IJMR

Founded in 1958, the IJMR provides thought leadership in the development and application of methodology for the market research and insight sector across the world, comprising the foremost body of knowledge in this field, with 60 years of published content written by leading practitioners and academics.

The value of IJMR to MRS is demonstrated by the coveted annual MRS Silver Medal, awarded to the author(s) of the paper that provides the most significant contribution to innovation and best practice in market research methods. 

The roles of Editor-in-Chief and Editor are to ensure that:

  • IJMR is published to a consistently high standard.
  • IJMR continues to be regarded as one of the world’s most rigorous and stimulating journal combining market, opinion and social research.
  • IJMR continues to expand its editorial reach to include new practice and thinking within the data sciences, data analytics and applied methodologies and technologies.
  • The Journal reflects key emerging issues and trends among research, insight and data practitioners and academics.
  • The Journal attracts submissions from around the world, maintaining an appropriate international editorial balance.
  • The peer-review process is professionally managed to ensure that there remains sufficient high-quality submissions to fill the required 6 issues per year.

The IJMR is published six times a year.  All articles are peer-reviewed, although shorter non-peer reviewed submissions are also accepted as Viewpoints.  In most years at least one of the six issues is a themed special report.

Editor-in-Chief role

The principal editorial accountabilities of the Editor-in-Chief are to:

  • Select and revise articles through peer review in accordance with publishing best practice, including the articles’ technical content, form, conciseness, clarity, and accuracy;
  • Uphold a high standard of publication ethics in the Journal, which includes ensuring that the Journal states and adheres to a rigorous peer review policy;
  • Manage the full peer review process using the SAGE Publishing’s web-based submission system; including but not limited to the tasks and responsibilities outlined in Schedule 3 attached;
  • Manage each issue including guest-edited special issues;
  • Ensure that there is adequate copy for the compilation of each issue;
  • Ensure that all final copy for each issue is supplied to meet the agreed production schedule specified by SAGE Publishing for publication of each issue to ensure that the compilation and publication of issues are not delayed;
  • Produce at least 6 blogs per year, including introductions to the quarterly IJMR Landmark Papers plus associated supporting social media as required by MRS and SAGE Publishing;
  • Select the quarterly Landmark Papers from the digitised archive of past issues;
  • Solicit content by attending conferences, identifying potential contributors and themes to ensure that the IJMR continues to be relevant, respected and authoritative;
  • Manage the international team of Editors, the IJMR Executive Editorial Board and the IJMR Editorial Board
  • Support the Editor in the undertaking of editorial operations
  • Chair quarterly IJMR Lectures.

Editor role

The principal editorial accountabilities of the Editor are to:

  • Comport with accepted ethical and peer-review standards, including best practices as identified by the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE), or the International Council of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME), or the Council of Science Editors, or as otherwise defined by SAGE.
  • Co-ordinate the full peer review process using the SAGE web-based submission system.
  • Liaise with the Editor-in-Chief regarding special issues.
  • Co-ordinate receipt of at least 2 independent reviews on most submissions (except desk rejects and non-peer reviewed materials such as Viewpoints and Conference notes)
  • Source and manage recommended Reviewers.
  • Ensure all international Associate Editors (as applicable) are using the SAGE web-based submission system fully.
  • Ensure that any objections to the propriety of the peer review process must be investigated and reported to SAGE
  • Promptly respond to author queries, escalating or referring any issues to the Editor-in-chief and/or SAGE as needed.
  • Liaise with the SAGE Peer Review Manager who provides support for the Journal.
  • Address and respond to any production queries or requests within 2 working days, especially concerning author issues or finalizing table of contents.
  • Support the Editor-in-Chief with the management of the Executive Editorial Board, Editorial Board and the relationship with MRS.

Experience and expertise

Applicants for the Editor-in-Chief role must have at least 15 years’ experience in research practice.  Experience of academia and/or supporting another academic journal would be highly desirable.

Applicants for the Editor role must have at least 5 years’ experience in either research practice or academia.  Some experience of supporting another academic journal would be desirable.

Application and selection

MRS invites applications from individuals or teams who wish to take on the responsibility of the IJMR Editor-in-Chief and IJMR Editor for five years from January 2019, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further four year term thereafter.

Applications should set out the case for an individual or team’s appointment, including your vision for the journal and any proposed division of labour (in the instance of team appointments) with regard to the major editorial tasks.

Individual experience and other current and projected commitments and responsibilities should be outlined, and a brief CV provided.

In addition to individuals, applications for both posts as an editorial team are welcomed.

Applications close on Monday 25 February 2019 and panel interviews will take place in the first and second weeks of March 2019 with a decision to be announced by early April 2019.

The current Editor-in-Chief will work with the new post-holders managing the transition to the new editorial arrangements.  The aim is for the new editorial team to be in post by end of May 2019.
