This course is now delivered online as a series of live sessions which fully meet the learning objectives of face-to-face training.

This course is made up of two half-day sessions: the first is an introduction for researchers across all sectors who have no prior knowledge of data protection or data privacy in research; the second is a more advanced session for those who have taken the first half of the course, can be a stand-alone option for researchers who already have a good understanding of data protection concepts.

7 May (Morning) 9:30 – 12:00
Data Privacy in Research – Introductory Course
This half-day session provides an overview of the data protection principles and key concepts in the UK Data Protection Act 2018, within the context of the research sector. It enables participants to develop an awareness of the legal framework and context for data protection and to build confidence around their responsibilities.

7 May (Morning) 13:00 – 15:30
Conducting a Data Protection Impact Assessment for Research Projects – Intermediate / Advanced course
Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) are required when processing data that is “likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms of natural persons.” This half-day course uses case studies to explore the appropriate use of, and approach to, DPIAs for research projects, focusing on their use in line with regulatory guidance published by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in this area.

The second session is more advanced and aimed at researchers and data protection officers, whether working in agencies or in client-side organisations, including those responsible for quality and compliance issues.

Each half-day costs:

  • £175 for Members and CPS
  • £245 for non-Members

The cost for both courses is:

  • £325 for Members
