At long last, Adland is beginning to wake up to issues of diversity and representation.

But in a territory full of potential minefields, how can brands – and the researchers who shape them – make sure that they are showcasing diverse individuals with authenticity, rather than jumping blindly onto the bandwagon?

In this presentation, speakers from the7stars and Sign Salad partner up to discuss how brands can do diversity well. Drawing on a rich collection of examples, they’ll turn the spotlight on some strategies that today’s most successful brands are using to stay ahead of the game, and change the conversation about whose faces, voices, and experiences matter.

Some main points that our presentation will cover:

  • The importance of consistency: tips for brands that are looking to include minority stakeholders across all touchpoints, not just reference them once or twice as a box-ticking activity. Going even further, how can brands incorporate minority individuals within the creative process so they can be the voice, and not only the face, of campaigns?
  • Guidelines for sensitively championing minorities who are often unseen or ignored – beyond portraying visually-obvious racial minorities, what can brands do for those who are disabled, homeless, etc.? How can they engage with them without being opportunistic?
  • As the cultural conversation shifts, consumers are increasingly embracing social multiplicity and difference, rather than denying it or trying to whitewash it out of existence. How can brands keep in step with this cultural milieu, and who are the leading disrupter brands to learn from in this regard?
